Wandering through the colony with Jade was rapidly becoming one of Wreckage’s favorite things to do. Before this, he’d always arrived with a list of items they needed and a plan to get it all done as efficiently as possible.

With Jade, it was different. They’d pick directions at random, exploring areas of the ever-expanding colony. She chatted with shopkeepers, which he discovered was a great way to find new places to eat and other shops to visit.

She was more social and outgoing than he had ever been, and it paid off in ways he’d never considered. It made him question yet again the choice Ruin and he had made to isolate themselves. They were missing out on more than they’d realized, all because of a secret he was tired of keeping.

“You’re quiet today,” Jade said.

“I’m not as good at socializing as you are. You make it look easy.”

Jade made a dismissive flicking gesture with one hand and laughed. “A waitress who doesn’t talk and make their customers feel at ease usually doesn’t have a job for long. Do it long enough, and it becomes second nature.

“Though I have to admit, I’m happy I don’t need to do that anymore. My new job doesn’t require small talk and banter. Now, if I want to talk, I can. If I want to go for a walk in the woods and enjoy the silence? I can do that, too.”

“How do you feel about walking in the rain?” He glanced upward to draw her attention to the dark clouds crowding out the sun. “Because I think that’s about to happen.”

“Rain is best enjoyed indoors. Otherwise, it’s a bit like taking a stroll through a cold shower you can’t turn off.” She looked at the sky and wrinkled her nose. “We’re going to get wet, and not in the fun way.”

“Not necessarily. We can make it to your place if you let me drive.”

“Drive?” she asked, confused. “We walked here.”

“But you have the option of using the cyborg express delivery service.” He opened his arms and grinned. “All aboard.”

She squealed with delight and stepped close enough for him to sweep her into his arms. “Home, please.”

“You got it, sweetling.”

He took off at close to his full speed, fast enough to get them home before the rain while still allowing for enough reaction time to avoid pedestrians and other obstacles.

Jade whooped and laughed as they raced the weather. “This is almost as good as a hover-bike ride!”

“Glad you’re enjoying it.”

He didn’t slow until they reached the bridge. The crowds were thicker here, and he had less room to maneuver.

Jade took it all in stride, waving to beings she knew and calling out warnings to finish their errands and get inside before the weather turned.

The first drops of rain pattered down as he reached the stairs leading up to her apartment. He put on one final burst of speed and lengthened his stride to take the steps two at a time.

They tumbled through the door together, both laughing as the downpour started in earnest.
